Man Utd Legend Teddy Sheringham Signs With ATK
|Former Manchester Utd and England legend Teddy Sheringham will lead Atletico de Kolkata in their 2017-18 Indian Super League campaign. As the third manager in the club’s history, the 51-year-old replaces Jose Francisco Molina. Molina himself already brought the club great success, winning the title before his departure. Now, Sheringham looks to carry on in the same manner.
Already one of the pre-season favourites for the title, ATK are hoping Sheringham’s experience at the top levels of football will carry the club to reach a record third title.
Having won a huge amount of trophies as a player, Sheringham brings the mentality of relentless winning to the table. As a player, he won the league title three years in a row with Manchester United between 1998-2001. Sheringham was also a part of the famous treble-winning side of 98-99, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.
Despite their early success in the ISL, ATK have been looking to help form a team that can dominate the league. The ex-Spurs man arrives with a desire to help push the club forward to the title, using his winning nous to help maintain a winning desire season in, season out.
When it comes to longevity, few can match Sheringham. He began his career at Millwall of London in 1983, and played until 2008 when he finished up with Colchester United. In that time, he made over 750 league appearances, scoring 289 goals. His time at Manchester United is probably his most recognisable spell, but he remains well-loved at former clubs Tottenham, Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth, West Ham United and even Colchester.
An Impressive Coup
ATK is Sheringham’s first foray into management following a short-lived spell as the manager of Stevenage. The 2017-18 league – a five-month marathon – is the longest format in the competition’s history. One of the most interesting introductions to Sheringham’ new team, though, comes from the signing of Robbie Keane.
The all-time international goal scorer for the Republic of Ireland and a player of wonderful pedigree, Keane has enjoyed a career to rival Sheringham himself. He’s played for clubs like Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds United, FC Internazionale, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and LA Galaxy.
A big character in the dressing room and someone who has led by example throughout his entire career, the Dublin-born star is likely to be a catalyst in any success that Sheringham has with ATK. If anything is going to help ATK establish a dynasty at the top of the ISL, it will no doubt be carried by the experience of glittering stars like Sheringham and Keane.
